Four Rows, Which Is Usually The Right Number

Three rows is the safe island and five rows is the dense one. Four is where most dry goods ranges actually land, and it is the arrangement we build most often. Every row is a clear tilt bin with a ticket holder along the front lip, stepped back from the row below so the whole range is legible from where a shopper stands rather than from where the fixture was designed.

The timber here is a pale tone rather than the dark plank facing used elsewhere in this category, which changes the fixture considerably in a bright store — a pale island under retail lighting recedes and the product carries the colour. Both ends are radiused, and the base is a closed cabinet run for refill stock.

The step between rows is set so the top row is readable from a standing position at the front edge. Four rows is where that stays true without the fixture getting deep enough to eat the aisle.

Board bent to the radius

The pale board is bent around the end. In a brightly lit store this is the detail that makes the island disappear behind the product, which is the point of specifying pale timber in the first place.

Every row carries a ticket holder along its front lip, and price tickets are supplied with the order rather than left to the store. On a loose goods aisle the ticket is doing pricing and product naming at once.

The base under the bins is closed cabinet rather than open shelf. Refill sacks live out of sight directly under the bins they serve, which is what keeps a bulk aisle from needing a trolley parked in it.

How This Island Leaves The Factory

Store fixtures are light for their size, so a container fills up on volume long before it fills up on weight. What decides your freight is not what one unit weighs — it is what shape the goods are in when they go through the container door. Everything we build leaves in one of three shapes, and a bulk island is the one that travels best.

Flat Packed Cabinet Panels

Bulk islands travel as panels — carcase sides, shelves, bin rails, back panels and plinths, strapped flat with bubble wrap on every component. They are built up on the shop floor, so the packing list and the assembly drawings travel with the goods.

Nested Trolleys And Hand Baskets

Trolleys slide into one another and baskets stack. Past the first unit, each extra one adds only its nesting pitch instead of its full length, so the shipped volume ends up a fraction of what the unit count suggests.

Fully Assembled Counters

A checkout lane is welded, coated and fitted out as one piece, so it is crated whole. That is the expensive end of the freight scale, and it is the reason a counter order and a bulk order load so differently.

Because this island ships as panels rather than assembled, the container arithmetic runs on panel count instead of on finished size — which is why two islands of the same footprint can load very differently depending on how many compartments each one carries. We do not publish a units-per-container figure for that reason. It is worked out against your actual order and comes back on the packing list together with the case dimensions, once the island size is confirmed.

What Usually Travels In The Same Container

A bulk island rarely arrives on its own. These three categories share the dry goods aisle with it, and putting them on one order is what lets a single colour reference run across the whole aisle, because it is then one batch of coating rather than three.

Loose grain and loose dry goods almost always share an aisle, and both want stainless wherever a scoop lands. Ordering them together keeps the two halves of the aisle in one timber.

Four Questions Buyers Ask Before Ordering

The four that come up on nearly every enquiry for this build. If yours is not here, send it with your aisle drawing and it is answered alongside the quotation.

Q01 How do I choose between three, four and five rows?

Count your loose lines and measure the aisle width. Three rows suits a short range or a narrow aisle, five suits a wide range on a tight floor, and four is where most stores land. Send both numbers and we will tell you which one we would build.

Q02 Is pale timber harder to keep clean than dark?

It shows marks sooner, which is a fair objection. Everything is plastic powder coated and protected against damp, so it wipes down the same way — but a pale island in a high traffic aisle wants wiping more often than a dark one, and that is worth knowing before you specify it.

Q03 Can the bins be different depths along the same row?

Yes. Compartment width and depth are set per bin rather than across the row, which is how a range with both a fast staple and a slow speciality line ends up on the same fixture without either one looking wrong.

Q04 What is supplied with the island?

Ticket holders are fitted and price tickets are supplied with the order. Everything ships flat packed as panels with bubble wrap on each component, labelled with type, title, quantity and manufacturer so the site crew can sequence the build.
