The One With Trays That Come Out To You

A deep cabinet has a back that nobody can reach. On a dry goods island that is where stock goes to be forgotten, and it is the reason this build exists: behind the doors the storage is on pull out trays that slide the whole contents out to the front instead of asking a staff member to lean in. The close-ups below show a tray part way out.

The frame is black steel with an X brace across each flank, which is doing real work on a square this size, and the timber top is divided into four quarters by the structure below it. The facing is a mid-dark board with the grain running horizontally on the flank panels, and the whole thing sits on a black plinth foot at each corner.

Slides out to the front

The tray brings the back of the cabinet out to the front of it. On a fixture restocked several times a day that is the difference between a cabinet that gets emptied and one that quietly fills up with forgotten stock.

Four panels, one plane

The top reads as four panels in one plane. The division comes from the structure underneath rather than being decorative, and it gives four natural zones for four lines without any physical divider.

A foot at each corner rather than a continuous plinth. It lifts the carcase clear for cleaning and it lets a pallet truck get underneath, which matters on a build heavy enough to want moving properly.

From above the four quarters and the horizontal grain of the flanks read as one surface. That is how the fixture is met on a shop floor, and it is why the quartering has to be square.

Store fixtures are light for their size, so a container fills up on volume long before it fills up on weight. What decides your freight is not what one unit weighs — it is what shape the goods are in when they go through the container door. Everything we build leaves in one of three shapes, and a bulk island is the one that travels best.

Bulk islands travel as panels — carcase sides, shelves, bin rails, back panels and plinths, strapped flat with bubble wrap on every component. They are built up on the shop floor, so the packing list and the assembly drawings travel with the goods.

Nested Trolleys And Hand Baskets

Trolleys slide into one another and baskets stack. Past the first unit, each extra one adds only its nesting pitch instead of its full length, so the shipped volume ends up a fraction of what the unit count suggests.

Fully Assembled Counters

A checkout lane is welded, coated and fitted out as one piece, so it is crated whole. That is the expensive end of the freight scale, and it is the reason a counter order and a bulk order load so differently.

Because this island ships as panels rather than assembled, the container arithmetic runs on panel count instead of on finished size — which is why two islands of the same footprint can load very differently depending on how many compartments each one carries. We do not publish a units-per-container figure for that reason. It is worked out against your actual order and comes back on the packing list together with the case dimensions, once the island size is confirmed.

What Usually Travels In The Same Container

A bulk island rarely arrives on its own. These three categories share the dry goods aisle with it, and putting them on one order is what lets a single colour reference run across the whole aisle, because it is then one batch of coating rather than three.

Loose grain and loose dry goods almost always share an aisle, and both want stainless wherever a scoop lands. Ordering them together keeps the two halves of the aisle in one timber.

Four Questions Buyers Ask Before Ordering

The four that come up on nearly every enquiry for this build. If yours is not here, send it with your aisle drawing and it is answered alongside the quotation.

Q01 What do the trays run on?

The runner specification is set per order against the load the tray has to carry, because a tray of packet goods and a tray of tinned stock are not the same problem. Tell us what goes in and the runner spec comes back on the quotation.

Q02 Can trays be mixed with fixed shelves in the same cabinet?

Yes, and it is a sensible arrangement — trays at the levels that get worked daily and fixed shelves for the slow stock. That split is a per store plan decision because it depends on how your staff actually use the fixture.

Q03 Is the X brace visible from the shop floor?

Yes, on the flank panels, and it is treated as part of the look rather than hidden. If you would rather it was not seen, the flanks can be boarded over — but the brace stays, because it is what keeps the square true.

Q04 Does it ship with the trays fitted?

It ships flat as panels like everything else in this category, with the tray components packed and labelled separately so they go in during the on-site build. Every package is labelled with type, title, quantity and manufacturer.
