A Rail That Holds The Bag Open

Watch a shopper at a checkout without a bag holder and they use one hand to hold the bag and one to pack. It takes roughly twice as long, and on a busy lane that time comes straight out of your throughput. This counter carries a chrome rail on the packing bay that holds bags open at the mouth, which frees both of the shopper's hands.

Everything else is a conventional charcoal lane: two pressed stainless tops, an 850 mm worktop, cashier at one end and packing bay at the other. The rail is fitted rather than welded on, so it can be positioned to whichever end of the bay your shoppers actually stand at, and it can come off entirely in a market that brings its own bags.

Holds bags open at the mouth

The rail holds carrier bags open so the shopper packs with both hands. It is a small piece of chrome and it is the single cheapest thing you can do to a lane to speed up the packing end of it.

Bolted, not welded

The bracket is bolted through the panel rather than welded to it. That is what lets the rail be moved to the other end of the bay, or taken off completely in a market where shoppers bring their own bags.

Cashier top and packing top are pressed separately at the same height. Splitting them means the packing end can be replaced after a decade of abuse without touching the till end.

The body under the packing bay takes the most contact of any panel on a lane, because that is where trolleys are parked and pushed against. Plain charcoal is specified there because it hides what the position does to it.

Nested Trolleys And Hand Baskets

Trolleys slide into one another and baskets stack. Past the first unit, each extra one adds only its nesting pitch instead of its full length, so the shipped volume ends up a fraction of what the unit count suggests.

A checkout lane is welded, coated and fitted out as one piece, so it is crated whole with padding on the steel. Nothing waits to be assembled at the store beyond levelling it into the lane, and the crate is the counter plus a margin.

A checkout lane ships assembled, so the crate is the counter plus a margin and the length you order is the length that loads. That is the expensive end of the freight scale, which is why a counter order is usually put on the same container as flat packed shelving and nested trolleys rather than shipped on its own. The loading plan comes back with your quotation.

Q01 Can the rail be retrofitted to another counter?

It is bolted through the panel rather than welded, so it can be added to most of our lanes. Tell us which counter you have or are ordering and we will confirm whether the panel takes it.

Q02 What size bags does it hold?

It holds standard carrier bags open at the mouth. Bag sizes vary by market more than most buyers expect, so send the bag you actually issue and the rail spacing is set against it.

Q03 Is chrome the only finish?

Chrome is what is photographed and it is the usual choice because it does not show handling. The rail can be powder coated to match the counter instead, which suits a store where the lane is part of the branding rather than just equipment.

Q04 Does it get in the way when nobody is bagging?

It sits at the back edge of the packing bay rather than over the working surface. If your shoppers mostly bag into trolleys rather than carrier bags, the honest answer is that you do not need it — and the rail comes off.
