Four, tipped to the queue
Each shelf is angled so its facings tip toward a shopper standing beside the lane. A flat shelf at this height shows a queuing shopper nothing but the top edges of the packets on it.

The side of a checkout counter faces a captive shopper for as long as the queue takes, and on most lanes it is a blank panel. This build runs four angled shelves down that side instead. The shelves tip their facings toward the queue rather than sitting flat, which is what makes them readable to somebody standing beside them rather than in front of them.
It is the highest value shelf space in a supermarket per square metre, and it is also the most abused: everything on it is picked up, put down and put back in the wrong place. So the shelves are steel rather than board, fixed to the counter carcase, and the whole assembly is powder coated in the same batch as the body.

Strip along every tier
Every tier carries a ticket strip along its front edge and price tickets are supplied with the order. Impulse lines change price more often than anything else in the store, so the strip has to be a card swap.
850 mm, unaffected by the tiers
The working top is a normal lane top at 850 mm. The tiers hang off the side of the carcase and take nothing away from the cashier's surface, which is the constraint the whole build had to respect.
Fixed to the body
The tier assembly is fixed to the counter carcase rather than standing as a separate unit against it. A separate rack drifts, gets knocked out of line and ends up blocking the queue.

Store fixtures are light for their size, so a container fills up on volume long before it fills up on weight. What decides your freight is not what one unit weighs — it is what shape the goods are in when they go through the container door. Everything we build leaves in one of three shapes.
Shelving bays, produce islands and bulk cabinets travel as panels — uprights, shelves, back panels and plinths, strapped flat with bubble wrap on every component. They are built up on the shop floor, so the packing list and the assembly drawings travel with the goods.
Trolleys slide into one another and baskets stack. Past the first unit, each extra one adds only its nesting pitch instead of its full length, so the shipped volume ends up a fraction of what the unit count suggests.
A checkout lane is welded, coated and fitted out as one piece, so it is crated whole with padding on the steel. Nothing waits to be assembled at the store beyond levelling it into the lane, and the crate is the counter plus a margin.

That is the expensive end of the freight scale, which is why a counter order is usually put on the same container as flat packed shelving and nested trolleys rather than shipped on its own. A checkout lane almost never arrives alone. These three categories share the front of the store with it, and putting them on one order is what lets a single colour reference run across the whole front, because it becomes one batch of coating rather than three.
The trolley bay sits within a few metres of the lane, and the lane length has to leave room for a loaded trolley to turn out of it.

Send the lane length and what you plan to merchandise on the tiers. Confectionery, batteries and magazines all want different shelf depths, and the tiers are sized against the actual lines.

Only if both sides face a queue, which is rare — the other side is usually the packing bay or the next lane. Where two lanes stand back to back, tiers on the facing sides of both is a good arrangement and we will draw it.
They are sized to what you merchandise on them rather than to a standard. Confectionery, batteries and magazines want quite different depths, so tell us the lines and the tiers come back sized against them.
They add to the overall width, and that is the trade. On a tight floor the tiers can cost you the clearance a trolley needs to pass, so send the aisle width at the lane as well as the lane length.
They are fixed at the angles photographed. Adjustable tiers drift out of line in exactly the position where a shopper is looking closest, so this assembly is built rigid on purpose.
