One Panel, One X, The Whole Front Elevation

The front panel of a checkout counter is the largest uninterrupted surface in the front of a store, and most counters waste it on a flat sheet. This one carries a single large X brace across a timber panel, framed by a grey steel body and capped in light grey at both ends. From the queue it reads as a piece of joinery; from the aisle it gives the front of the store a horizontal line that ties the lanes together.

Behind the panel it is a conventional straight lane: pressed stainless worktop with a raised rim, 850 mm off the floor, cashier station at one end and packing bay at the other. The X is applied to the panel rather than being structural, which means it can be specified on any lane length without changing the carcase.

The X Crossing

Applied brace, timber panel

The two diagonals meet and are set into the panel rather than laid over it, so the surface stays flush. A raised brace collects dust at the crossing, which on a counter panel at knee height is exactly where nobody looks.

Panel Timber

1.5 to 2.5 mm board

The panel is paint-free wood grain board over the steel carcase. It is the board rather than the frame that gives the run its appearance, and it comes in a range of colours without the plastic look of a printed metal facing.

Both ends, wrapped

Each end is capped in a lighter grey that wraps the corner. It stops the timber panel dying into a raw edge and it takes the trolley knocks that always land on a lane end.

The worktop is pressed with a raised rim so goods slid across it stop at the edge instead of over it. On a lane without a belt, everything is slid rather than carried, and the rim is what stops the floor collecting the misses.

Shelving bays, produce islands and bulk cabinets travel as panels — uprights, shelves, back panels and plinths, strapped flat with bubble wrap on every component. They are built up on the shop floor, so the packing list and the assembly drawings travel with the goods.

Nested Trolleys And Hand Baskets

Trolleys slide into one another and baskets stack. Past the first unit, each extra one adds only its nesting pitch instead of its full length, so the shipped volume ends up a fraction of what the unit count suggests.

Fully Assembled Counters

A checkout lane is welded, coated and fitted out as one piece, so it is crated whole with padding on the steel. Nothing waits to be assembled at the store beyond levelling it into the lane, and the crate is the counter plus a margin.

A checkout lane ships assembled, so the crate is the counter plus a margin and the length you order is the length that loads. That is the expensive end of the freight scale, which is why a counter order is usually put on the same container as flat packed shelving and nested trolleys rather than shipped on its own. The loading plan comes back with your quotation.

What Usually Travels In The Same Container

A checkout lane almost never arrives alone. These three categories share the front of the store with it, and putting them on one order is what lets a single colour reference run across the whole front, because it becomes one batch of coating rather than three.

Four Questions Buyers Ask Before Ordering

The four that come up on nearly every enquiry for this build. If yours is not here, send it with your layout and it is answered alongside the quotation.

Q01 Does the X repeat down a row of lanes?

It does, and that is the reason to specify it. A single X on one counter is a detail; four of them down a row of lanes is the front elevation of your store. Tell us the lane count and we will draw the row rather than the counter.

Q02 Is the X structural?

No — it is applied to the panel, and the strength is in the steel carcase behind it. That is deliberate: it means the same brace can go on a 1200 lane and a 2000 lane without redesigning the counter.

Q03 Can the timber be a different tone?

Yes. The board comes in a range of colours and the steel is powder coated to any RAL or PANTONE reference, held across every category on the same order. A pale board with a dark frame reads completely differently from the combination photographed here.

Q04 What is the worktop made of?

Pressed stainless steel with a raised rim, from a single sheet. The body under it is 0.8 to 1.5 mm metal sheet with stainless steel board where it is needed, and a heavier gauge is available on request.
